Space Invaded, and Evicted?

SPACE INVADED!

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED…..IT WAS ACE!

Manchester Space Invaders landed on Thursday night…. Dodgy TV kicked off

the weekend with films about squatting (including the OK cafe) and a tribute to Free party stalwart Charlie. This was followed by a late night opening at the new social centre. Intrepid invaders then took to the skies for a night of audacious banner hanging around the city to promote the weekend and No Borders

Friday night was the opening bands night at the squat, with everything from punk to folk, via electro randomness. This was a fundraiser for the Basement Social Centre; which lives on through the collective despite  being temporarily shut down.

On Saturday the Manchester space invaders took to the streets to reclaim some ‘public’ spaces…The family funday was a success despite being somewhat overshadowed by the corporate presence of the Manchester
swimathon in Cathedral Gardens. The space invaders supported the teenagers who are constantly moved on and targeted by police for assemblying in ‘public’ spaces. With a range of music, from bike soundsystems to a folk and samba band, space invaders hung out in the sunshine with the I bike MCR art parade. They made banners, painted faces, did tai qi..and were entertained by a magician!

In the evening, up to 200 squatters and No Borders activists held an unauthorised demonstration in the city centre. Accompanied by a samba band and two soundsystems mounted on bike trailers, they marched from Victoria Station into the Northern Quarter, along Market Street and Kings Street, through Spinningfields into Castlefield.

The event, called by the group Manchester No Borders, called for the defence of squatted spaces and the freedom of movement for all. Squats and autonomous spaces face a hard time from the authorities. Yet, for many people, especially some migrant communities, they are the only alternative to homelessness.

The demonstration highlighted the ridiculousness of hundreds of houses standing empty, while many of us face extortionate rents, mortgage repayments or eviction threats.

At the end of the march in Castlefields, the protesters succeeded in taking symbolic action against the redevelopment of the area, occupying an old pub and having a celebration of autonomous spaces. The redevelopment of Jackson’s Wharf into a block of flats was recently fought off by local
opposition; but in many parts of the city the battle has been less successful.

After the demonstration some space invaders took off to a party in an old furniture warehouse in Ardwick, but this was sadly busted by the police and shut down after a couple of hours..

GET INVOLVED!

The home of Manchester Space Invaders in Moss Side is a beautiful building, an old church/Youth Offenders Institute, 135 Chichester Rd South, Moss Side (next to Kath Locke centre). We are in court this Thurs…we need your help!
Do you have any good legal advice? Space that we could store equipment in? Transport?

We want to keep this project going..and occupy another building..

putting on an event? Would you like to help in the vegan cafe? Got an art installation you want to show? Film screening? need somewhere to have a band practise? Any other random ideas that require a social space to work?

Interspace

International meeting for squats and autonomous spaces

Kesselberg, Berlin 24th - 26th May 2008

International meeting for autonomous spaces - why?

Following on from the last international squat and autonomous spaces victories: to redraw the battle lines. To achieve durable exchange and solidarity on an international level.

The time

The meeting will last three days: from Saturday May 24th till Monday 26th. We invite everybody to arrive on Friday during the day or in the evening.

For those who can stay a bit longer, the Berlin free spaces action days are taking place from the 30th May to the 2nd June (wba.blogsport.de).

Agenda

We of course have some ideas and have included the suggestions already made in Dijon, but the agenda is open and in the end determined by the people who come. If you have ideas, wishes or if you want to do a workshop, send us an email to intersquatberlin@riseup.net

Proposed topics so far:

  • How do we deal with repression?
  • What new strategies are there to create and invent squats and autonomous spaces?
  • How does paying rent or buying houses influence the reality of autonomous spaces?
  • What are free spaces and why are they important?
  • How do autonomous spaces generate, maintain and involve themselves in broader social struggles?

And of course there will be need to speak about the April Action Days, to evaluate the actions and the networking process and to possibly further develop the infrastructure created in Dijon.

The place

The meeting is taking place at Kesselberg, an autonomous/project space in the countryside just outside Berlin. There is space at Kesselberg for about 100 people to sleep (but please bring tents if you have one), as well as several rooms for plenaries and workshops. The place is surrounded by woods and there is a lot of space for taking breaks or meeting outside if the weather is good.

Leave your dogs at home if possible. If you do bring them please keep them close to you at any time, as there are wild animals in the woods surrounding Kesselberg and already a bunch of dogs living there.

The site is also chemical free. The people at Kesselberg have said they can provide soap, but if you bring your own, make sure it is completely chemical free.

How to get there from Berlin:

Public transport: The nearest train station is Erkner. Just take the S3 train, direction Erkner. This is a local Berlin train line and tickets cost about 3 euros.

From Erkner station we can either pick you up if you let us know when you’re arriving, or you can take the bus. The bus is Line 428, direction Ziegenhals, until the stop ‘Neu Zittau, Kesselberg’. The entrance to the Kesselberg land is next to the bus stop. Alternatively, it takes about 20 mins to cycle there from Erkner.

With a car: Kesselberg is about 7km south of Erkner, between Neu Zittau and Wernsdorf. Driving from the Berliner Ring, either take the Erkner exit via Neu Zittau, or the exit Niederlehme via Wernsdorf , direction New Zittau. For a map see www.kesselberg.info/weg.html

There is limited parking space at Kesselberg, so it would be helpful to let us know if you are coming by car or wanting to park a live-in vehicle on site for the duration of the meeting.

So that we can prepare enough space, organise enough food etc., we need to get an idea of how many people to expect, so please let us know you are coming. Likewise if you need a place to stay in Berlin just before or after the meeting, please email us at: intersquatberlin@riseup.net

Keep an eye on the blog for up to date info: http://interspace.blogsport.de/ See you in May!

Manchester Space Invaders

Posted in 1 on March 21, 2008 by mcraz

Manchester Space Invaders are a collective of autonomous groups and inidividuals working together to reclaim our city…we are mobilising to fight gentrification, ‘regeneration‘ and all the borders that exist within the city. We call for all groups, individuals, networks and families to get involved and to join in our glorious celebration of autonomous spaces…

space invaders

We are everywhere…For centuries, people have used squats and autonomous spaces, either urban or rural, to take control of their own lives.. For decades, squat movements across Europe and beyond have fought capitalist development, contributing to local struggles; providing alternatives to consumer culture; running social centres; demonstrating the possibilities for self-organising without hierarchy. These networks have changed many lives, providing free spaces where people can live outside the norm.In April Manchester Space Invaders will continue this tradition..taking over the city, and creating autonomous spaces for all…On Friday 11th there will be live music with bands performing in the evening, workshops, and an opportunity for people to get creative and get involved in plans for the weekend…Saturday 12th will see autonomous groups from across the city working together to create…
-a fair in a park near the city centre during the day,
-a creative squatted space holding workshops and family friendly activities, including practical workshops.
-a demonstration and street party in the early evening in defence of autonomous spaces and freedom of movement.

We call for all groups, sound systems, individuals, artists, campaigns networks, individuals, performers, families, and anyone else besides to get involved and help us to reclaim the streets, the parks and the city…

Keep watching for full timetable and details…
Manchester Space Invaders next meeting on Thursday 28th March, 6pm at the Archways project, for directions and info, or to join the collective

DEFENCE OF AUTONOMOUS SPACES.Assemble at Urbis (next to Victoria
Station), 5pm
Check http://www.april-12.blogspot.com/ for updates.
Across the country cities are being sold to the highest bidders. The
drive for ‘regeneration’ is demolishing homes, marginalising
communities, privatising public space and closing down vital community
services. There has seldom been a time when fighting for autonomous
spaces in Manchester has been more important.
The struggle for self-organisation and social autonomy brings migrants
and squatters into inevitable confrontation with the existing social and
political system. Self-organisation does not mean living outside of
society. We want to live in it but according to our own rules. We want to
emancipate ourselves from the capitalist processes that govern our city
and our lives, withoutturning our backs to society.
